From Herder and Laborer to Entrepreneur: Ihsanullah’s Journey to Success

In the village of Koh Sayad, Shirin Tagab District, Faryab Province, Ihsanullah, a 23-year-old young man, faced immense hardships. As the eldest son and the main provider for his family of seven, he had to take on physically demanding jobs at a young age. Due to economic hardships and ongoing conflict, he was unable to complete his education and spent most of his childhood herding animals and doing strenuous labor to support his family.

In August 2018, Ihsanullah learned about DACAAR’s Vocational Training Program (SSED) under the "Livelihoods, Health, and Life Quality Improvement on a Sustainable Basis" project, supported by NMFA. The program aimed to equip young Afghans with practical skills to help them build sustainable livelihoods. he saw a glimmer of hope with seeing an opportunity for a better future, Ihsanullah applied for the training and was selected after a thorough assessment by the DACAAR team. Over the course of six months, he trained in professional tailoring, learning the technical skills needed to start his own business.

"I had no opportunity to continue my education, and my future seemed uncertain. I spent years herding animals and doing heavy labor just to survive. But when I heard about this program, I knew it was my chance to break free from hardship and build a better life," Ihsanullah recalled.

With dedication and hard work, he completed the tailoring course by February 2019 and quickly mastered the trade. After graduating, he opened his own tailoring shop in Shirin Tagab’s market, where his skills earned him a strong reputation, and he soon had a steady flow of customers. Today, he now employs eight apprentices and has delegated most of the stitching work to them while he focuses on cutting and design. During peak seasons like Eid and New Year, he works late into the night to meet customer demand.

"This training completely changed my life. Before, I was struggling as a herder and laborer, barely making ends meet. Now, I run my own shop and have a stable income. I earn between 30,000 to 35,000 AFN per month, which allows me to support my family and even help my younger siblings continue their education," he said with pride.

The impact of Ihsanullah’s success goes beyond his household. His financial stability has improved his family’s diet and overall quality of life, and he has become a role model in his community. Many young people who once considered migrating to Iran for labor work are inspired by his journey and eager to join vocational training programs to build sustainable livelihoods at home.

"Many young people here face the same struggles I did. Without opportunities, they risk falling into addiction or being forced to migrate for harsh labor. I urge organizations like DACAAR to expand vocational training programs so more young Afghans can learn a skill and build a future in their homeland," he expressed passionately.

Ihsanullah’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of vocational training. From being a herder and struggling laborer to a successful business owner and mentor, he has proven that with the right support and determination, a better future is possible. Thanks to DACAAR’s program, he has broken free from the cycle of poverty and now empowers others to do the same.
