Hasamuddin’s Story: From Struggling Farmer to Thriving Greenhouse Entrepreneur
In the remote village of Koh Sayad, Shirin Tagab district of Faryab Province, Afghanistan, Hasamuddin, a 45-year-old farmer and sole breadwinner for his family of 13, once struggled to make ends meet. As a traditional, non-specialized farmer, he faced financial instability and had to work as a daily laborer or even migrate to Iran for better opportunities. However, his life took a transformative turn in 2014 when he became a beneficiary of DACAAR’s "Livelihoods, Health, and Life Quality Improvement on a Sustainable Basis" project, specifically its Greenhouse Initiative, supported by NMFA.
DACAAR provided Hasamuddin with agricultural support by constructing a 210-square-meter greenhouse on his land, equipping it with a drip irrigation system, and supplying cucumber seeds. Additionally, the organization's agricultural experts guided him in modern farming techniques, enabling him to transition from conventional farming to technical and sustainable greenhouse cultivation.

"Before this greenhouse, I was farming traditionally and struggling to support my family. DACAAR not only provided me with a greenhouse but also taught me modern techniques that changed my entire approach to agriculture," said Hasamuddin.
With his newfound expertise, Hasamuddin expanded his greenhouse to 2,500 square meters in 2024 using local wooden materials. He successfully cultivated high-yield cucumbers, generating a revenue of 425,000 AFN in a single season. His success inspired him to continue growing a variety of vegetables throughout the year, ensuring a steady income even in the winter.
Before receiving assistance, Hasamuddin faced severe economic hardship. His agricultural yields were low, and he barely earned enough to support his family. With DACAAR’s intervention, he not only secured a sustainable livelihood but also created employment opportunities for 5-6 permanent workers. His improved financial situation allowed his children to continue their education while also gaining business skills by selling farm products.
Employed by Hasamuddin, the workers take pride in being part of his thriving greenhouse project.
Hasamuddin’s transformation extends beyond his family. He now shares his agricultural knowledge with fellow farmers, advising them on market-driven cultivation, pest control, and fertilizer use. This has helped strengthen local food security and boost economic activity in his community.
"Now, not only do I earn enough to support my family, but I also employ others. I no longer have to migrate for work, and I can plan for a better future right here in my own village," he proudly shared.
Looking ahead, Hasamuddin plans to construct additional greenhouses and cultivate various vegetables, including tomatoes, bell peppers, and other high-demand crops. His vision aligns with market trends, ensuring profitability while conserving water resources. He advocates for similar greenhouse projects in rural Afghanistan, emphasizing their potential to combat food scarcity and unemployment.
Hasamuddin’s journey from a struggling farmer to a self-sufficient agricultural entrepreneur showcases the transformative power of targeted development projects. Thanks to DACAAR’s support, he has built a stable and prosperous future, proving that with the right resources and training, sustainable farming can transform lives and uplift entire communities.
