Empowering Communities in Nuristan: Abdul Wakil’s Story
In Shakot village, nestled within Nurgram district of Nuristan province, Afghanistan, life has always been a struggle. The villagers, including Abdul Wakil, have faced the harsh realities of deep poverty, unemployment, and a lack of basic life facilities. These challenges not only affected their day-to-day survival but also led to an increase in crime, as desperation pushed some towards unlawful activities.
Abdul Wakil, like many others in his village, found it increasingly difficult to meet his family’s most basic needs. With limited income and rising costs, putting food on the table was a daily battle. The situation was particularly dire for the most vulnerable—children, the elderly, and pregnant women—whose health and well-being were at significant risk due to malnutrition and poor living conditions.
In October 2023, hope arrived through the "Food Assistance, Livelihood Protection, and Restoration for Food Insecure Vulnerable People in Nuristan Province" project, funded by the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF) https://www.unocha.org/afghanistan/about-afghanistan-humanitarian-fund and implemented by DACAAR. The project provided essential food supplies to the villagers, including 150kg of flour, 12kg of Tajiki beans, 12 liters of oil, and 1.5kg of salt.
This assistance had a profound impact on Abdul Wakil’s life. With the food provided, he was able to reduce his financial burdens and ensure that his family’s basic food needs were met, at least for a time. "The provided assistance helped me in reducing my financial difficulties and fulfill my basic food needs at least for a time," said Abdul Wakil, expressing his gratitude.
The project didn’t just alleviate immediate hunger; it also improved the overall health of the villagers, particularly the most vulnerable, and contributed to a reduction in poverty and crime within the community. The positive outcomes were clear, but so were the concerns for the future.
While Abdul Wakil and his fellow villagers are grateful for the support, they worry about the sustainability of such aid. The project, though impactful, offers only temporary relief. The villagers understand that without fundamental changes, such as creating job opportunities or supporting micro-businesses, especially for the unemployed youth, the cycle of poverty and hardship will continue.
Abdul Wakil’s story is a testament to the difference that timely assistance can make in a community’s life. However, it also highlights the need for long-term solutions that empower people to build better, more secure futures for themselves and their families.
