PRESS RELEASE

DACAAR MARKS 40 YEARS OF SERVICE TO AFGHANISTAN

Kabul, Afghanistan – On September 11, 2024, DACAAR celebrated its 40th anniversary with an event in Kabul, bringing together board members, senior management, regional representatives, and humanitarian partners working in Afghanistan. The ceremony began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a prayer in memory of DACAAR staff who have passed away in the last decade.

John Morse, DACAAR’s Director, and Peder Kynde Thorning, Chairperson of DACAAR’s Governing Board, delivered keynote speeches. Thorning emphasized that while DACAAR continues to adapt to the evolving challenges in Afghanistan, its core mission—supporting the Afghan people—remains unchanged. He expressed deep appreciation for the organization's staff, particularly those working in difficult and dangerous conditions, and recognized the resilience of Afghan communities enduring hardship.

The director highlighted DACAAR's long-term commitment since its founding in the 1980s, focusing on delivering life-saving assistance and sustainable livelihoods to vulnerable populations across Afghanistan. He also thanked donors for their continued support through numerous challenges over the years.

Deputy Director Haji Shah Wali reflected on DACAAR’s journey from a small sewing center for Afghan refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan, to a nationwide organization. His remarks underscored the organization’s growth and its ability to adapt to the changing needs on the ground.

Richard, Director of the Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief and Development (ACBAR), announced a new survey to assess challenges faced by NGOs under recently implemented project regulations. He expressed hope that the findings will guide advocacy efforts and strengthen partnerships with Afghan authorities.

INSO Director Domini Earnshaw recognized DACAAR as a valuable partner in Afghanistan and addressed the operational challenges faced by NGOs. He emphasized the importance of safety for humanitarian workers and congratulated DACAAR on reaching this significant milestone.

The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, where participants reflected on DACAAR's achievements and shared optimism for the future.
