A Tale of Transformation: DACAAR's Lifesaving Mission in Logar
In the heart of Logar province, Afghanistan, a prolonged drought had cast a harsh shadow over the lives of its resilient people. The natural water sources, upon which they depended for survival, dwindled to a mere trickle. The challenges were immense, with no access to clean, potable water becoming a daily struggle for many, including Jamal Khan Said, a resident of a remote area in Logar.
Jamal Khan, 57 years old, recounted the difficulties his community faced. "We had no drinking water," he said. "We were compelled to trek 2 kilometers to fetch water, even using animals to assist. But then, an NGO dug a well, solving our drinking water crisis. Unfortunately, after two decades, the drought has returned, destroying our wells, and forcing our elders and children to embark on long journeys for water once again."
The financial burden of repairing these wells was beyond their means, trapping them in a cycle of poverty. That was when DACAAR, with the funding of BHA/USAID, entered their lives. After conducting thorough surveys, DACAAR embarked on a mission to repair the inactive and destroyed wells. Jamal Khan Said expressed their gratitude, saying, "We couldn't afford to repair those wells, it was too costly for us. Recently, DACAAR personnel came to our village, surveyed our wells, and brought them back to life. Now, our wells are working like brand new."
DACAAR's impactful project in Logar province, which commenced on April 1, 2023, and is set to conclude on November 30, 2024, went beyond just well repairs. After their survey, DACAAR's dedicated staff provided vital resources, including Hygiene Education Kits, Hygiene Education Messages, and the rehabilitation of water points, as primary assistance for the community.
Jamal Khan Saw the services of DACAAR as life-changing. He said, "Now, we have access to potable water, and we've learned about proper hygiene practices through the HE kit. We are immensely grateful because this assistance was urgently needed. Before receiving this aid, we lacked access to clean water and knowledge about hygiene and sanitation."
Not only are they committed to following DACAAR's guidance for healthier lives, but they also have newfound access to sustainable water sources. Still, Jamal Khan voiced a humble request, "The HE kit and messages are invaluable, but we hope DACAAR can also construct some small check dams to prevent water scarcity in the future. This would secure our path to a more resilient life."
DACAAR's intervention in Logar has not only provided clean water but also empowered a community to safeguard their future. It's a testament to the positive impact that collaborative efforts can bring, offering a lifeline to those in need.
