Welcome To DACAAR

Since its establishment in 1984, DACAAR has been a prominent name in the humanitarian and development sectors in Afghanistan. As a non-political, non-governmental, non-profit organization, it works to improve the lives of the Afghan people by addressing the acute needs of the most vulnerable and supporting early recovery and sustainable development for all.

DACAAR’s emergency response interventions aim at life-saving in early stages of a crisis targeting internally displaced people, returning refugees, and communities affected by conflicts and natural disasters. Over the past years, DACAAR has endeavored to be among the first responders to people affected by shocks across Afghanistan.

Message From The Director John Morse

When I joined DACAAR 10 years ago, I was lucky enough to be part of the 30th anniversary. It was probably one of the best ways to join as a director, helping gather the information for the Anniversary book, and learning at the same time about the great history and achievements of those 30 years. This was an important occasion for all, a great DACAAR heartbeat for the staff and their accomplishments, which was also backed up by our HQ event and I was amazed when we had that event in Denmark with all the people that came from the past and present, many coming to share their stories, the interest and passion of how DACAAR was such a part of their lives and also how the donors and government representatives, past and present regard DACAAR and it achievements.

10 years on and here we are again. It has certainly been a 10-year challenge. My first decision with the team was to work on DACAAR’s funding and the shift in the country towards more humanitarian funds. This was necessary to cope with the rise in conflict around the country, as well as the changing political dynamics and global country interactions with Afghanistan.

Over the next 10 years, the situation continued to change, presenting us with the great challenge that we are now facing - the August 2021 takeover and the transition we are managing. New challenges arise every day, with new decrees and restrictions, and the international interaction being cautious and sometimes confused. I could mention coping with Covid-19 too but as our staff dug in and coped so well I will just thank them again for that.

The one big thing in all this, and it has not changed in the 40 years, is the need for the work we do and the hard work our staff do in doing that work. Whether it is under the justification of development, humanitarian, conflict affect, IDP’s, returnees, lifesaving, shock assistance, basic protracted needs or curbing migration, and now more than ever climate effected Afghans, to name a few, the need is greater than ever.

The hard work and resilience to support that need must carry on, and I am very very sure DACAAR and the team, with the help of their donors, can and are doing that.

We must continue to help the Afghan people.
